Technoturn attended the Autosports Show at the NEC Birmingham
Technoturn exhibited at the West of England Aerospace Forum annual conference on the 4th February 2009. ________________________________________ Latest Press Realease in Engineering Capacity Turning to more demanding markets Technoturn has turned its focus to demanding markets, using technology and lean manufacturing methods to give it a competitive edge. It has now expanded its facilities to accommodate three new VMCs.
As larger companies outsource to low cost countries should subcontractors reduce margins? Or should they take the initiative and expand into other more demanding markets reducing costs by embracing technology and lean manufacturing? David Mcllwain, managing director at Technoturn, prefers the second option. By using lean manufacturing methods and using best practice procedures throughout our manufacturing operation we strive to achieve the least cost and most efficient manufacturing solutions for all our customers by providing quality components at a cost effective price with on time delivery and a customer focused responsive friendly attitude towards our customers needs, says Mr McIlwain. The latter provided a four-sided cube trunnion system for three-face machining on the fourth-axis unit and a Kit-75 Plus system for three axis milling. David Mcilwain, the managing director of Technoturn says: “To perform the high-spec jobs in today’s industries, all our milling machines are fitted with MicroLoc vices and trunnions, which offer high accuracy and repeatability. MicroLoc vices are made of hardened steel, allowing the tightest grip on the component. They also offer the ability to clamp your own special jaw on, which enables the user to fit the component at any angle.” Technoturn take delivery of a new Doosan DNM 500

Precision subcontractor, Technoturn has invested in a new Doosan DNM 500 vertical machining centre supplied by Mills CNC, which is being used to machine a diverse range of complex, high-precision components for the aerospace, defence, motorsport and medical sectors, and the electronic connector industry. The machine, installed at the company’s facility in Hastings in March, is the third (and largest) Doosan vertical machine purchased by Technoturn in the last 18 months. Parts manufactured by Technoturn are machined from a variety of metals and materials such as aluminium, titanium, stainless steels, exotic alloys and plastics, are machined to high accuracy (0.01mm), and exacting surface finishes. Batch sizes are equally varied with the company machining prototypes, one-offs and small batch series on one hand, right through to medium-to-high volume production on the other. Technoturn director David McIlwain reflects on the latest investment: 'When the company was first established in 1995, our focus was very much on turned parts and turning technology. We invested heavily in sliding-head lathes, and followed this up by making significant investments in multi-axis, multi-tasking turning centres. Over the last couple of years we made the strategic decision to develop and broaden our manufacturing capabilities still further, as a route to growing the business and strengthening our position in the numerous supply chains we are involved in. This has seen us not only continue to invest in sophisticated lathes and turning centres, but to also increase and improve our in-house milling capabilities as a consequence. This explains the recent investments in Doosan vertical machines, and what this means is that today we can deliver comprehensive, cost-competitive and world-class CNC machining solutions to customers.'
